This cartoon raises questions about at what point is a threat considered lethal and what is an appropriate response in self defense. I examined a different angle of the Three Little Pigs story with a dinner scene where one of the three original pigs dines the Big Bad Wolf as the main dish while his son watches in horror. Behind them on the wall rests a rifle, implying that the wolf was shot, and below sits a plaque as a trophy saying: “He huffed and he puffed!” This saying is also what the pig uses to justify shooting the wolf in response to its threatening language and presence. I made this piece as a reflection of the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse and police brutality, asking similar questions myself. In many ways, members of the African American community, especially in lower income neighborhoods, are painted as thugs, drug dealers, or “wolves” in society, and this biased perception has allowed for countless police brutality and wrongful judicial rulings.
