2017 WT Girls’ Tennis Team

The Winchester Thurston Varsity Girls’ Tennis team had a very successful season! The WT Bears won four out of nine matches! The tennis season started in late August when the Bears played Avella. Though the Bears fought until the last point, they lost 1-4.  The next match was a tough one against Sewickley Academy. Despite playing their best, the team lost 0-5. The subsequent match was a victory against Keystone Oaks at 4-1! At the following match against Hopewell, WT pulled another strong win, 3-2! Afterwards, they fought hard against Ellis but sadly lost 0-5. Next, they played Carlynton whom they beat 5-0! With a winning streak at the following match, the Bears beat Riverview at 5-0!  Afterwards, they fought hard against Ambridge but fell 0-5. Not a team that gives up, the Bears next played Riverview and beat them 5-0! The Bears then played Ambridge to whom they lost 0-5. Finally, they played Vincentian, fought their hardest, and ended up with the score: 1-4.

Co-captains Alexandra Friedlander, a sophomore, and Anatea Einhorn, a senior, qualified for sectionals! Anatea sadly lost her first match against Ellis. However, Alexandra won her first two matches against Ellis and Carlynton. She then played Sewickley, but after playing her hardest, she fell to Sewickley. The next day, Alexandra played Ambridge at Sewickley Academy for third or fourth place, but lost to Vincentian. Alexandra qualified to go to WPIALS. A few days later, Alexandra went to Greensburg Racquet Club for WPIALS, where she played the number one player from Knoch High School, to whom she lost. The Bears played very well this season, kept a good attitude, and always cheered each other on. They should be very proud of themselves!

This year’s varsity line up was: Alexandra Friedlander seated as number one singles, Anatea Einhorn seated as number two singles, Coco Chen (freshman) seated as number three singles, Sofia Borrero (junior) and Bridget Hughes (sophomore) seated as number one doubles, and Daniella Shear (junior) and Lily Jerome (freshman) seated as number two doubles.

We should be very proud of the Winchester Thurston Varsity Girls’ Tennis team. The players tried their absolute hardest with every ball they hit, whether they were playing in hot, humid weather or or playing in fifty degree weather. No matter what the circumstances were, the Bears always did their best.
