Disney Channel in the 2000’s versus Disney Channel Today
The amazing Disney shows and movies that the early 2000’s kids love and know will never be duplicated. With shows like Kim Possible and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and movies such as Up and Bridge to Terabithia, Disney Channel always had an ability for stretching viewers’ imaginations and giving them some warm and fuzzy feels along the way. Current high school students fondly look back at the series where celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Debby Ryan, and Miley Cyrus rose to fame in shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place, Jessie, and Hannah Montana. Oh! What simpler times those were back then. Special effects weren’t great and artificial laughter was present in the background of almost all shows. Kids would rush home after school and throw their backpack down at the base of the steps in order to run to the TV to watch their favorite Disney show.
Not only is Disney Channel now just another children’s television channel, but Disney classics, especially High School Musical are a distant past, and not cherished by today’s youth, but a rerun that is skipped over, just like all the others. Jessie, an old popular Disney show, where Jessie, portrayed as Debby Ryan moves to New York City from Texas and accepts a job nannying four children. After years of reruns of Jessie were completely taken off of Disney, the current and inferior spin off of Jessie was put on Disney, Bunk’d. Bunk’d although had the same actors and actresses is not as popular as Jessie was, and most likely never will be. Disney Channel is also is not as popular as it used to be. After asking several neighbors with younger children, most of them do not watch Disney, they watch television shows on tablets and ipads on apps such as netflix and hulu. Disney Channel has gone downhill, it isn’t as popular as it used to be, especially among youth. Looking back Disney was a major part of a lot of now teens childhood. Reruns of shows from our childhood are still occasionally played on tv, but will reruns of current disney shows be played 10 years from now? If so will kids be watching them? In 10 years will kids even know what Disney is, or will netflix and hulu be their reality?
