It’s hard to believe that our teachers have lives outside of school. They do things on the weekends, they have friends and kids, they go to the grocery store, and they allegedly were once in high school. I couldn’t imagine the person they described in their awkward high school anecdotes. I needed proof, so I asked teachers to share a picture of them and their favorite song from high school. Some teachers were hesitant to share such personal things with remarks like, “I don’t want that on the internet,” “My mom has all of them,” or “I was so nerdy.” But some, the brave few, shared. Here are 14 of our teachers’ favorite songs in high school:
Mr. Miller: “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang
“Where did all that hair go?!?!” – Mr. Miller
Madame Kotowski: “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack
“Killing Me Softly With His Song” was Madam Kotowski’s audition song for an advanced choir. She got in, of course.
Mr. Davidson: “Every Little Things She Does is Magic” by The Police
“Me wearing my vintage 1987 Interlochen Music Camp hoodie while using an Amiga computer to create graphics for the TV Club. Woot!” – Mr. Davidson
Mrs. Sickler: “Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie” by Bob Dylan
Mr. Maione: “Hey Jude” by The Beatles
Ms. Oglesby: “Bills, Bills, Bills” by Destiny’s Child
Dr. VandenBosche: “Shame On You” by Indigo Girls
“I listened to a lot of early 90s techno as well as a lot of late 90s Riot Grrrl punk bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and The Butchies, as well as some girl folk/rock like Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Dar Willimas and a bunch of older folk and rock bands like Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. But the song “Shame on You” stands as one of the songs my best friend and I would sing in the car.” – Dr. VandenBosche
Ms. Belfiore: “Stay Young, Go Dancing” by Death Cab for Cutie
Mr. Nassar: “Push” by Matchbox Twenty
“Yes, this is the song that is made fun of in the guitar playing scene of The Barbie Movie.” – Mr. Nassar
Mrs. Martin: “One Love” by Whodini
When Mrs. Martin was in high school, she went to a party hosted by a boy she had a crush on, but told her mom she was going bowling with her friend. While Mrs. Martin was at a “horrible party”, her mom was calling other moms to double check Mrs. Martin’s story. After two weeks of the silent treatment, Mrs. Martin betrayed her mom’s trust so much that she wasn’t allowed to go to the Run DMC “Raising Hell” concert with Whodini and LL Cool J. To this day people still reminisce over the concert, including Mrs. Martin who still has her ticket.
Ms. Mohn-Slate: “Talkin Bout a Revolution” by Tracy Chapman
Mrs. Emmerson: “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode
Mrs. Emmerson with her pet ferret, Freddy. She listened to a lot of new wave music (obviously, see picture above).
Mr. Krause: “We Will Fall Together” by Streetlight Manifesto
Dr. Gough: “Masters of War” by Bob Dylan
“My favorite song in high school was Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War,” which is an unfun and uncool song…so at least I’ve been consistent in my life.” – Dr. Gough
