This past week, I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing our new Athletic Director, Mr. John Rosa. With over 35 years of experience working in public schools, Mr. Rosa saw WT as a great new opportunity. “At first, I wasn’t sure it would be the right fit, but when I came here, it just felt right. I’m just trying to do what’s in the best interest of all students. I might make some decisions that people might say, ‘I don’t understand that decision,’ but I think it’s one of the things I do have experience in. I have a pretty good sense for some changes that need to be made in the best interest of students.”
Mr. Rosa has had significant success as a football and wrestling coach, and he currently serves on the WPIAL Wrestling Steering Committee. In answer to a question about his favorite part of coaching, Rosa said, “You know, the strategy of it; moving players around to different positions. Giving kids opportunities, too. Coaching is a rewarding profession… and of course, building relationships with the kids.”
Reflecting on his role as an Athletic Director, Mr. Rosa expressed what he enjoys most: “I would say seeing kids succeed and reach their goals and their full potential. We just want to create a good experience for student-athletes.” His passion for developing student-athletes is clear.
When asked about the life lessons students can learn from sports, Mr. Rosa emphasized the importance of commitment, dedication, and teamwork. “There aren’t too many professions where you work independently, so learning to be a part of a team is really important. The memories, too. You’re gonna remember games that you played in for the rest of your life. These sorts of bonds and friendships last forever.”
Mr. Rosa also plans on promoting a new girls’ volleyball program, currently also being supported by Mr. Maione: “I know we’ve had some interest in girls volleyball, so we’ll work on implementing that.” He also made clear that with enough interest, expanding WT’s athletic offerings is very plausible.
When asked about some changes he plans on implementing, Mr. Rosa emphasized getting around our lack of facilities — specifically for outdoor sports and regarding Garland Field, which measures under standard size for many sports, making it ineligible for official games. However, he is optimistic about finding creative solutions: “I hope to make changes that might be thinking outside the box, but help our programs out in the long run…These implementations might be different than what WT is used to, but I have a vision that will make a better experience for students.”
Looking ahead at this school year, Mr. Rosa shared: “I enjoy all sports; competition, having fun, working together. I love to see students representing the school and community with a sense of pride and a sense of passion. You know, If you’re gonna do something you may as well try to be great at it. I love soccer, I love basketball. It’s always fun to show up to a track meet. I’m still learning about field hockey and lacrosse at WT, and I’ve never gone to a crew or fencing event, so I’m looking forward to that. There are lots of things WT has that are new to me, and will broaden some horizons for me, so to speak.”
Mr. Rosa brings experience, enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective to WT’s athletics department. He is focused on student success; he has a strategic approach to his work ethic and expressed his openness to new opportunities. Mr. Rosa is sure to make a lasting impact on our school community – students, staff, and athletes alike can look forward to the changes he plans to bring to WT athletics.
