As the lyrics “MISSED CALL, MISSED CALL, MISSED CALL, MISSED CALL” began to ring out from the stage my ears became forever blessed. It was a Friday night last April when giddyup debuted “Thank You for Calling” at the Warhol Museum. After signing up for four teen museum memberships to get free admission to the museum’s Youth Invasion night, I felt a little less electrified than when I agreed to go. This feeling was only reinforced while I sat through two or three sets from other local teen bands. It wasn’t till giddyup took the stage and played the final song in their set that I was left in awe.
“Thank You for Calling,” with the same vibe as “Rebel Girl” or “Cool Schmool”, left me wishing for a cassingle that I could pop into my whatever cassingles are played by machine and ragefully flop onto my bed. So, this past week, while listening to giddyup’s new EP, Bigfoot, for the first time and seeing “Thank You For Calling” on the track list I realized two things, 1: Christmas had come early, and 2: the Grammy, dare I even say Nickelodeon slime-worthy, potential sitting right in our very own dear old WT.
giddyup, previously named Bigfoot, is a band featuring both WT alumni and current students, making you almost required to listen to their new EP. The band members include Abby Buzzard (vocals/guitar), Dima Chemaitilly ’24 (bass,) Dagny Haglund ‘25 (synth/trumpet/vocals), Caroline Dudash (drums), and Nate Weinstein ‘24 (drums). Besides “Thank You For Calling,” literally every other song on Bigfoot is incredible. With lyrics like “You’re a Shirley Temple and I’m drunk on you,” one is unable to stop bopping to it. Deemed a full listening experience by all it is a truly unskippable EP. If you would like to partake in this new cultural phenomenon or have a spiritual experience similar to mine on that fateful April night then I have only one question for you, have you listened to Bigfoot?
