In previous years, the WT squash team has struggled to keep enrollment up, only having fourteen players last year. That’s why this year came as such a big shock when no less than thirty players signed up to play. There seem to be several reasons for this increase. Some people joined for the P.E. exemption, others joined to hang out with their friends, but of course, the main reason is to play the incredible sport of squash!
Now, you may ask yourself, “What is Squash, how is the game played?” Well, the answer is actually quite simple. There are two players per court, and each starts on the back half of the court in their respective boxes. The objective is to hit the ball to the front wall between the outline and the tin. If your opponent fails to return the ball before it hits the ground twice or if they hit it above the outline or below the tin, you win the point. To emerge victorious, you must win three matches, and each match is first to eleven. But if the game is tied ten to ten then you must win by two.
Not only is this a fun and challenging sport, but WT also has a promising team this season. Only two schools play squash in the Pittsburgh region, Winchester Thurston School and Shadyside Academy, so if you are ever interested in watching some squash, you should cheer on your WT Bears at one of the soon-to-be-announced tournaments. Next year, if you find yourself looking for a new sport to try, join squash because the more the merrier!
