From mock trial to ping pong, the clubs at WT are a helpful and engaging way to learn, make new friends, and expand one’s interests. However, a new club has garnered attention from a number of students: Model United Nations.
In this club, students create a simulation of the United Nations where they are given a certain issue area to fix. The students act as delegates that research, debate, draft, and vote on resolutions. These components of Model UN help students become confident and influential public speakers, proficient researchers, and clever problem solvers. This club is led by sophomores Sophie Filipink-Smith, Kate Huang, and Aiko Witten, with Hayden Morehouse as the director of fundraising. Each attended the Altitude for Leadership Model UN conference in New York when they were in 8th grade.
Despite being a new club, the WT Model UN team has already had a number of accomplishments, such as attending the Model African Union conference at the University of Pittsburgh, holding a bake sale, and holding a mock conference to draw in new members.
“Starting up Model UN this year was so fun! We had a successful first conference at Pitt, and a very successful Mock Conference here at WT, with many new club members!”
-Sophie Filipink-Smith
The Model UN team has many ambitions for the 2025-2026 school year such as attending more conferences at Pitt, and attending an even larger conference in New York City. Hopefully, with help from its leaders, participants, and the club’s amazing faculty leader, Dr. Andy, the WT Model UN team will continue to flourish and thrive in the upcoming school year.
