This summer, there were a number of movies and TV series that caught the attention of many. However, there was a particular movie that stood out from the rest: KPop Demon Hunters. According to Tudum, K Pop Demonhunters has become” the most popular Netflix film of all time, with more than 236 million views to date.”
When my friend told me about this show and played the music nonstop, I was a little sceptical. But as soon as I watched it and listened to Golden, I was hooked.
For those who have not yet watched this movie, K Pop Demon Hunters showcases the journey of a Korean girl group called HUNTR/X (Huntrix). Together, they fight against demons that steal the souls of their fans. The demons are led by a king named Gwi Ma, who thrives off of the souls of humans so he can finally escape from the demon world into the human world. The members of Huntrix, Zoey, Mira, and Rumi, are given the mission of making music to maintain the Honmoon, the barrier between the demon world, and the human world.
The movie strongly touches on how important it is to not hide who you are. The three main characters are safeguarding big secrets about their lives and this as a whole restricts their friendship and success. During their primary struggle of the movie, the three characters create more attacking music while later in the movie when they accept each other for who they are, they create their best and most welcoming music. Despite being an animated film with fantastical aspects, it is very representative of the importance of being true to your identity and accepting your friends for who they are.
The soundtrack in this film played a fantastic role in bringing it to life. It is a beautiful arrangement of songs compiled of catchy vocal melodies, punchy rap verses, and bold instrumentals. As an avid listener of many 3rd and 4th gen kpop groups, this soundtrack highly reflects the unique and diverse nature of the genre of K-Pop.
If you enjoyed the amazing songs from KPop Demon Hunters, then you are in luck because there is more where that came from! If you enjoyed the chart-topping song “Golden”, then you would love “I Am” by the 4th gen girl group IVE. These songs both have catchy melodies and an upbeat rhythm that anyone can sing and dance to. If you are a fan of the calm, heartwarming tune of “Free” sung by the two main characters Rumi and Jinu, then you would probably enjoy “Butterfly” by BTS. It is the perfect song to listen to during the moments where you just want to relax. Finally, if you enjoy the song “Takedown” then you might like BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That.” These songs both have fun, powerful lyrics and instrumentals that will make you feel like the coolest person on the planet.
KPop Demonhunters has taken over TV screens across the United States and is being sung everywhere in schools. The themes of self empowerment motivate kids everywhere and I know I’m going to be singing “Golden” for the next several weeks.
