Grappling With Columbus’s Legacy 🇺🇸⛵️🌽
Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s day is today. For many, many years Columbus has been idolized and revered. People have viewed him as a conquistador who discovered America, but in truth there is an incredibly tragic side to that story that is rarely told: in order for the Americas to be colonized land was stolen from the indigenous populations previously living on that land and previously thriving tribes and civilizations were destroyed. Processing and grappling with this history is difficulty so Aria sat down with our History faculty to talk about it. Huge shoutout to Ms. Gropp, Dr. Naragon, and Mr. Morales. We talked about Columbus day, teaching Americas nuanced history, and what WT role’s in dealing with this messy past is. We hope you enjoy!

I’m so impressed by this episode of “Bear Talk”! The thoughtful questions evoked such a rich response from our history department. These 28 minutes gave me a lot to think about–thank you!
