This past Sunday, 1/18, Georgie’s Corner Bakery and Cafe on Walnut street welcomed customers for the last time after four years of operation. The owners shared a post on Instagram on Thursday, January 15th, informing their 7,000 followers of the closure. The cafe’s profile has since been deleted.
In their statement, owners Beth-Foley Saxon and George Saxon wrote: “We are honored to have been a part of the Shady Side community. Thank you to our neighbors for being our greatest supporters. We are so thankful for our loyal customers.”
Additionally, they expressed their hope that “a new tenant will soon continue our mission of providing a gathering space for the neighborhood.”

On the day that the closure was announced, a GoFundMe page was created to help the staff of Georgie’s Cafe transition to new work. In the description, it was explained that the closure was due to the “increasing costs of ingredients and labor,” and that “Georgie’s Corner’s main concern when making the difficult decision to close was the well-being of their staff.” In the last five days, over 100 donations have been sent, totaling to 95% of their 6.5K goal.
