This season was another difficult yet rewarding one for the squash team! This winter, the team grew from 30 members last year to 40 and won both of their matches against the Steel City Squash Academy. Additionally, a middle school squash team at WT was established, making it so players will be able to acquire more experience and better technique before they reach upper school. The team is coached by Adam Brownold and Duilio Costa and is only one of two schools to still compete in Pittsburgh, along with Shadyside Academy. Speaking of which, this year, the WT Squash team had the opportunity to play against Shadyside. Later in the year, the team also participated in a major tournament featuring Shadyside Academy, Mercersburg Academy located in Mercersburg PA, and University School located in the Greater Cleveland area of Ohio.
“My favorite part about the season was the people because they were very supportive and taught me a lot about the sport!”- Ashi Kittur ’29
“I thought this season was really fun! I enjoyed getting closer with my teammates and learning from Duilio. Competing was kind of scary but I was also surprised by the level of skill some kids at WT had that I wouldn’t know unless I’d joined the team.” -Aiko Witten ‘27
“With this year being my last one on the team, I am really going to miss the bus rides and Duilio. Everything was a lot of fun.” -Evan Burns ‘26
The team had many different levels of skill. For many, this season was their first time touching a racket, while others had years of experience. Although there were only two days of practice each week, the team still showcased a considerable amount of growth in technique and athleticism. We look forward to seeing the squash team succeed to an even greater extent next year. Go Bears!
