Project Hail Mary, a recently released film adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir, has been a huge success. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as the main character, who is a science teacher-turned-astronaut named Ryland Grace. Below is a quick glance into the surplus of interesting tidbits regarding the film’s production and release.
1. Sandra Hüller chose “Sign of the Times”

Perhaps one of the most talked about scenes in the entire film wasn’t included in the original script. The screenwriters approached Sandra Hüller, a German actress who played Eva Stratt in the film, and asked her to sing in the movie. According to screenwriter Drew Goddard, Hüller only agreed to do it if she could sing Harry Style’s “Sign of the Times.” The performance was put together only 48 hours before filming the scene.
2. Ryan Gosling was a producer
If you stayed for the end credits of the film, you might’ve noticed that Ryan Gosling is not only the main actor, but a producer as well. Gosling discovered author Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary before its publication in 2021. His immediate love for the story led him to quickly assemble a team to acquire the adaptation rights in 2020, embarking on a six-year journey to convert the book to an equally legendary movie.
3. Artemis II astronauts watched it before leaving
While in quarantine before taking off for their mission, the Artemis II astronauts viewed Project Hail Mary. Astronaut Jeremy Hansen gave the film “two thumbs up” and referred to it as “a real treat.” When asked what feedback he would give to Ryan Gosling, he said, “He did a great job in that movie…I thought it was just such an inspirational example, and somebody who goes out there and just gets what was done to save humanity. It’s a pretty extraordinary example that we can all follow. We all thought that movie was really uplifting and inspiring.”
4. Grace’s glasses were because of Gosling’s daughter
The glasses of Gosling’s character, which often hung awkwardly from his neck throughout the movie, were a result of a comment from his young daughter. Gosling originally felt that glasses were too cliché for an intelligent character, but when he tried them as a joke, his daughter said that he needed them to look smart. Thus, the glasses remained for the movie – albeit haphazardly.
5. Rocky’s Voice

Rocky’s puppeteer, James Ortiz, also became the host of his recognizable voice. The original plan was for Ortiz to say lines while filming, and then have a more famous voice dub them post-filming. However, his connection with the character and the film made his voice irreplaceable. Ryan Gosling said that, “He [Ortiz] was never supposed to be Rocky’s voice. He just had such a deep connection with the character that I could ask him anything as Rocky, and he knew what Rocky would say, what he would like, what he wouldn’t like.”
