In the past weeks, a new trend has quietly taken over. You may have seen groups of people in a loose circle, focused but laughing, kicking a colorful sack through the air. This sport is called HACKY SACK.
First popularized with the “laid-back” culture of the 1980s, kicking a sack in a circle became a staple for teens, skaters, and self-proclaimed free spirits. It was played on music festival grounds, university quads, or really anywhere people had a few minutes to kick around a sack. It wasn’t a competition, rather a matter of flow and teamwork.
But like a lot of things from that era, it faded into the past. UNTIL NOW.
What’s so strange about the recent surge of Hacky Sack was how quiet it was. There was no major event, no viral movement or exposure, instead it found itself back. A few videos here and there, groups of friends playing outside their school, and suddenly, the sport was back. Some students in the school have come up with their own theories for the comeback
Zac Balk ’26 notes, “I think that if there’s a will, there’s a way.”
A more interpretive take, leaving the viewer to use their own understanding to grasp what the “will” is.
Davis DeSimone, a sophomore at WT, says, “It’s ride or die for the sack…dude.”
This quote unveils the pure passion that Hacky Sack brings out, it’s more than a sport, it’s a way for communities to connect, and creativity to thrive. Underclassmen find it most enjoyable as it gives them a chance to work with Upperclassmen in a judgment-free and fun environment.
In order to showcase the talent present in WT, a group of students ranging from sophomores to seniors has taken initiative and made a team. The official name: Chester Sack Society. From posting “Rally of the Day” to using their influential Instagram following to organize spirit days, they have integrated sack culture within the school. They have aspirations to continue and expand the team, hoping one day to spread Hacky Sack culture to all.
